Women's Health
Health questions change across life stages. This page is a starting place for women and anyone navigating puberty, periods, pregnancy or menopause while living with PKU, HCU, MSUD, a urea cycle disorder or another inherited metabolic disorder. Each person's needs are different; your metabolic and other health-care teams can help you make a plan that fits you.

Puberty & Growing Independence
Puberty can bring questions about body changes, periods, nutrition, privacy and taking a larger role in your own care. Young people and families can ask their metabolic team what to expect for their condition and how to prepare for the move toward adult services.

Periods, Hormones & Daily Life
If you menstruate, you may notice changes in appetite, energy, mood or the ease of keeping your usual routine. Tracking a pattern can help you describe it to your care team. Ask about symptoms that concern you and whether your condition-specific nutrition or monitoring plan needs attention.

Pregnancy
Pregnancy planning, pregnancy and the time after delivery can raise different questions for each disorder. If pregnancy is a possibility or you are already pregnant, connect with your metabolic clinic early. The condition-specific pages below are for learning and preparing questions with your team.
PKU / Maternal PKU
Explore planning, nutrition, postpartum support, research and lived-experience resources alongside your clinic's advice.

HCU / Classical Homocystinuria
For classical HCU caused by CBS deficiency, pregnancy conversations include metabolic care and clotting risk. Other forms of homocystinuria need their own advice from the treating team.
Explore Pregnancy & Classical HCU →
MSUD / Maple Syrup Urine Disease
Pregnancy and postpartum planning may involve changes in nutrition and careful preparation for delivery and recovery.
Explore Pregnancy & MSUD →
UCDs / Urea Cycle Disorders
Considerations vary by the specific UCD and the person. Planning with an experienced team is especially useful around delivery and postpartum, when ammonia problems can occur.

Perimenopause, Menopause & Aging
This life stage can bring changes in sleep, mood, energy and overall wellbeing. It is a good time to review nutrition, bone health, medications and any new symptoms with your health-care team, including how these fit with your metabolic condition. We are gathering more condition-specific resources for this section.
