Tools & apps
We review digital tools that support day-to-day dietary management for inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). These tools generally fall into three categories: specialized single-condition trackers, multi-IEM platforms with richer clinical context, and clinician-grade nutrient-analysis systems. More detailed app-by-app information is available below on our Digital Tools Apps page.
Important note for patients and families: Food amino-acid values and “Phe per gram” values can come from different sources (label data, public databases, estimates, or lab analysis). Some tools explicitly use estimation where data is missing, so logs should be treated as decision-support and reviewed with a metabolic clinic team where appropriate. flok publicly explains that it uses USDA + MetabolicPro where possible, and “industry-standard estimates” where missing, with some foods lab-tested in its own program. [2]
Privacy and data residency (Canada): Many apps do not clearly state where cloud data is stored (Canada vs US vs EU). Because diet logs and lab values can be sensitive health information, Canadian users should ask about data residency and safeguards before sharing exports with schools, caregivers, or clinics. Canada’s privacy regulator notes that PIPEDA does not prohibit cross-border transfers for processing, but the organization remains accountable for protection via safeguards and contractual controls. What’s next
Coming soon. We’re working on clear “how to choose” guidance (what to track for each disorder, export tips for clinic visits, and questions to ask app developers about privacy and data residency).
