Event Scholarships

Don't let finances get in the way of attending events. We know travel, registration, and accommodation costs can add up quickly. Our event scholarship program is designed to help reduce barriers so more individuals and families can participate in community, education, and connection opportunities.

Our approach
We aim to support as many families as possible in a thoughtful, respectful, and non-judgemental way. Registration support is prioritized first, and additional travel or accommodation support may be considered based on need, distance, participation details, and available funding.

Who can apply?

Event scholarships are intended to support individuals affected by inherited metabolic disorders and, where appropriate, their caregivers or immediate family members attending with them.

  • Applicants in Canada are prioritized when funding is limited.
  • One application is considered per household for each event.
  • Registration support is generally intended for the individual living with the condition and one parent or guardian when the individual is under 18.
  • Where a household includes multiple eligible individuals, support may be considered based on the event and available funds.
  • Additional attendees are welcome, but may need to register at their own cost.
What support may be available?
  • Registration fees
  • Ground travel support
  • Air travel consideration for longer-distance travel
  • Accommodation support when needed

Priority note: We try to ensure registration is not the barrier that prevents someone from attending. After that, additional support is reviewed based on need and available funds.

Travel support tiers
Tier 1
Travel by car is equal to or less than 6 hours.

Tier 1 requests are generally considered for land travel costs only.
Tier 2
Travel by car is more than 6 hours.

Tier 2 requests may be considered for airfare support, depending on the event and available funds.

Mileage reimbursement for travel by automobile is based on the vehicle, not the number of occupants. To help stretch available funding, CanPKU+ may encourage carpooling when families are travelling similar routes.

Important expectations
  • Applications must be completed and submitted by the stated deadline for the event.
  • Applicants are generally expected to participate in the event as scheduled.
  • Receipts and required reimbursement documentation must be submitted after the event.
  • Tier 1 support is reimbursed after the event. For longer-distance travel, airfare may be reviewed earlier where permitted.
  • If support is offered, applicants are expected to respond within the stated acceptance period so funds can be allocated fairly.
Volunteer contribution

Scholarship recipients are expected to contribute volunteer time during the event. We do our best to match tasks with your interests, availability, and the time you will be on site. Arrival and departure details also help us identify opportunities such as setup or teardown support.

  • Less than $100 = 2 hours
  • $101 - $250 = 4 hours
  • $251 - $500 = 6 hours
  • $501 - $900 = 8 hours

Additional volunteer hours are always appreciated, but no monetary compensation is provided for extra hours worked.

After the event

Recipients may be asked to complete follow-up steps such as submitting receipts, reimbursement forms, or a brief reflection on their experience. Stories about how support made participation possible can help encourage future donors and strengthen community support.

What funds this possibility?

Event scholarships are made possible through the generosity of our community. Funds may come from peer-to-peer fundraising, individual donations, sponsorship support, and other charitable giving that helps CanPKU+ reduce barriers to participation.

Spare for Rare is one example of our community raising funds to support one another. Small contributions, shared widely, can help make meaningful access possible for families who might otherwise not be able to attend.

Including a donation option is not tacky here. It helps explain how scholarships are sustained and gives visitors a clear way to support access for others.
