A new way to search for clinical trials in Canada
On July 29, 2026, Health Canada launched the new Canadian Clinical Trial Search Portal as part of its work to improve transparency and public access to information about clinical trials in Canada.
The portal replaces Health Canada's previous Clinical Trials Database and provides information about clinical trials involving pharmaceutical, biologic and radiopharmaceutical drugs that have met Health Canada's regulatory requirements.
For patients and families, one of the most useful changes is the ability to search for trials based on both a medical condition and where the research is taking place in Canada.

What can you search?
The portal allows users to search using several different types of information, including:
- Disease or medical condition
- Drug or treatment name
- Sponsor name
- Protocol code
- Trial status, including trials that are recruiting
- Province or territory
- City
- Date the clinical trial was approved by Health Canada
Once results are displayed, additional filters can help narrow the list by trial phase, location, age category, sex and whether trial results are available.
Why does this matter for rare metabolic communities?
Finding clinical trials can be particularly challenging when you live with a rare disorder. Studies may involve only a small number of participants, may be available at just a few Canadian centres, or may use terminology that families do not immediately recognize.
A Canada-focused search gives patients and caregivers another way to identify research that may be relevant without having to sort through large numbers of studies taking place exclusively outside Canada.
The portal can also help families see where a Canadian trial is taking place and whether the overall study is listed as recruiting, not yet recruiting, active but not recruiting, on hold or closed.
